CYBERSPACE -- Kurt Repanshek, blogging at National Parks Traveler, has taken the National Park System to task for their plans to install wireless cameras at Yellowstone National Park to allow rangers to monitor campers and hikers in order to "monitor resources and address safety concerns."
"On one hand, should we be surprised by this development? After all, major cities line their streets with webcams, and in Utah and no doubt many other states the interstate highway corridors have webcams attached to light poles so authorities can keep an eye on traffic flows and watch for accidents," writes Repanshek.
"But on the other, have we really reached the point where we need to put webcams in the backcountry of the world's first and most-renowned national park "for resource monitoring or to address safety concerns?" he asks. "And, by the way, if this policy stands it clears the way for every other national park in the country to do the same."
